A
Pau is a flowing, skirt-like garment worn in the early 1900's by women
as protection against dirt and dust
while traveling on horseback to visit friends and neighbors. Women would
wrap their Sunday best in a Pau
and arrive unsullied, the roadways of the day being most likely dirt.
Nowadays, Pau riders can be seen in holiday parades on most of the Hawaiian
Islands.
